Dental Crowns – What You Need to Know

A dental crown, commonly referred to as a “cap,” is custom-made to cover and protect a damaged tooth. It provides full coverage, restores strength, supports the structure of the tooth, and ensures proper occlusion (your natural bite). Crowns are designed to look and feel like your natural teeth, restoring both function and appearance.

Crowns are recommended in several situations: when a tooth is heavily decayed, cracked, fractured, or broken; after root canal treatment; when a tooth is mostly restored with fillings; to cover a dental implant; for cosmetic improvements; or if the tooth is worn down or discoloured.

There are various crown materials available, including Gold, All Porcelain, Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM), All Ceramic, and Metal Crowns. Your North York Cosmetic Dentist will recommend the most suitable type based on your specific dental condition and location of the tooth.

All Porcelain crowns offer a highly natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal crowns provide added strength, making them a great choice for molars where bite pressure is highest. For maximum durability, especially in back teeth, all-metal crowns may be recommended.

In some cases, crown lengthening (a minor gum surgery) may be necessary if there isn’t enough natural tooth structure to support the crown. This will be assessed during your initial consultation.

Why Choose a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are a long-term solution for restoring damaged or compromised teeth. They can protect weak or broken teeth, restore aesthetics and function, and help maintain your overall oral health. Whether for cosmetic enhancement or structural support, a crown blends seamlessly with your natural teeth and allows you to chew, speak, and smile with confidence.

Important Things to Know About Dental Crowns

The dental crown process usually involves two appointments. At your first visit, your North York Cosmetic Dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia, reshape the tooth to prepare it for the crown, and take precise impressions of your teeth and gums. A temporary crown will be made chairside to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being fabricated.

It typically takes the dental lab about two weeks to complete your custom crown. During your second visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be bonded securely in place. The final result is a tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural part of your smile.

If you’re considering crowns for your front teeth (anterior teeth), keep in mind that crowns do not respond to teeth whitening. It’s best to whiten your teeth before getting crowns placed to ensure an even, bright smile. Be sure to ask your dentist about whitening options during your consultation.

Reasons to Consider a Dental Crown

People choose dental crowns for many reasons, including:

  • Restoring strength and structure to a damaged or decayed tooth

  • Improving appearance, shape, or colour of a tooth

  • Protecting a tooth after a root canal

  • Covering a dental implant

  • Reinforcing a tooth that’s cracked, broken, or heavily worn

  • Making cosmetic enhancements to improve your overall smile
