Root Canal Therapy
Root Canal Therapy – What You Need to Know

Thanks to modern dentistry and advanced technology, root canal therapy is now a common, routine treatment for saving infected or abscessed teeth. This procedure can be performed by your North York Dentist or by a specialist known as an Endodontist.
Root canal treatment becomes necessary when a tooth is injured, cracked, or decayed and the inner tissue—called the pulp—becomes infected. During the procedure, the infected pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and the space is filled with a durable composite material. The surrounding area is numbed to ensure your comfort throughout the process.
It’s important to act quickly when infection is present to avoid severe pain and to stop the spread of bacteria to other parts of the body. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed prior to treatment.

Why Choose Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy helps preserve your natural tooth and eliminates pain and infection. Once the procedure is complete, a dental crown is typically recommended to protect and strengthen the tooth, as it becomes more brittle without its nerve and blood supply.
Nitrous oxide is available for patients who feel anxious or nervous about the procedure—ask your North York Dentist if this option is right for you.

Treatment Options

If the infection has already set in, there are two main treatment options:
-
Root Canal Therapy – to remove the infection and save the tooth
-
Extraction – followed by tooth replacement with an implant, bridge, denture, or no replacement
