Dental Implants
Dental Implants – What You Need to Know
Despite advancements in dental care, millions of Canadians still experience tooth loss—often due to gum disease, tooth decay, or injury. Dental implants are widely regarded as the most natural and durable replacement option available. Designed to mimic the structure of a natural tooth, an implant includes both a root (the titanium post) and a crown, giving you a long-lasting, fully functional, and natural-looking result.
The implant procedure begins by placing a small titanium post into the jawbone, beneath the gumline, where your natural tooth once was. Once healed, this post acts as a secure anchor for a single replacement tooth, an implant-supported bridge, or even a full denture. Depending on your needs, your North York Cosmetic Dentist or an Oral Surgeon may carry out the procedure.
Why Choose a Dental Implant?
Dental implants offer a strong, stable, and permanent solution for tooth loss. Unlike removable dentures, implants stay securely in place, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. Implants also preserve your facial structure by preventing bone loss in the jaw, helping you maintain a natural, youthful appearance. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime—making them a smart, long-term investment in your health and smile.

Important Things to Know About Dental Implants
Not everyone is immediately eligible for implants. To be a candidate, you need healthy gums and enough bone density to support the implant. In cases where bone is insufficient, your dentist or oral surgeon may recommend a bone graft to rebuild the area. This may be done either before or during the implant placement, depending on the situation.

In the upper jaw, where bone height may be limited, a sinus lift may also be required. A panoramic X-ray will help determine if either of these additional procedures are necessary.
The healing process following implant surgery varies based on your specific treatment, but generally takes 3–6 months before the final prosthetic (such as a dental crown) can be placed. If your implant is placed by an Oral Surgeon, you may require a few follow-up visits to monitor healing before being referred back to your North York Cosmetic Dentist to complete the final phase.
